Here’s how it works locally: you call or submit our online form, confirm a pickup window, and tell us where the car is parked. How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Share your Michigan vehicle details
Call Great Lakes Givers or complete the quick online form with your Michigan location, vehicle year/make/model, and whether it runs. Tell us if it’s in a driveway, garage, apartment lot, or on the street. The more accurately you describe access and condition, the easier it is to match you with a local tow partner in your part of Michigan.
2. Confirm a pickup day and time window
Our team checks towing coverage in your area—whether you’re in Metro Detroit, West Michigan, Mid-Michigan, or up north—and offers available windows. You pick the day and a general time frame. City pickups (like Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor) typically schedule sooner; more rural or seasonal areas may need an extra day or two for routing, but we’ll confirm realistic timing upfront.
3. Prepare the title, keys, and parking spot
Before pickup, sign your Michigan title as we instruct and remove your license plates. Place the signed title and keys in an agreed-upon secure spot in or on the vehicle if you won’t be home. Make sure the car is reasonably accessible for a flatbed or tow truck and that any gate codes, parking rules, or low-clearance garages are shared with us ahead of time.
4. Meet the driver or leave everything with the car
You do not have to be present at pickup as long as the driver can reach the vehicle, keys, and title as arranged. A local Michigan towing partner—often a neighborhood operator who knows your streets—will load the vehicle using a flatbed or hook-and-chain truck. They’ll handle the hookup, even if the car doesn’t start, has a dead battery, or has flat tires.
5. Receive your tax receipt and finish the donation
Once your vehicle is picked up, Great Lakes Givers processes the donation and mails you a tax receipt. In most cases, you’ll be able to claim at least a $500 deduction; higher values are supported with IRS Form 1098-C. Local pickup gotchas
Tight city streets, alleys, and downtown parking
Tip: In dense areas like downtown Detroit, Midtown, Ann Arbor, or Grand Rapids’ Heritage Hill, narrow streets, alleys, and tight parallel parking can slow pickup. If possible, move the car to a driveway, side street, or more open lot before your window. Let us know about low trees, tight turns, or loading docks so we can send the right truck and avoid delays.
Gated communities and apartment complexes
Tip: In gated neighborhoods or complexes in places like Novi, Troy, Sterling Heights, Wyoming, or East Lansing, drivers can be turned away without access. Share gate codes, building numbers, and detailed parking instructions when you schedule. If your HOA or management has towing or permit rules, let them know in advance that a charitable donation pickup is scheduled to prevent confusion or tickets.
Very rural or seasonal Michigan locations
Tip: In more remote parts of Michigan—areas around Houghton Lake, Cadillac, the Thumb, or the Upper Peninsula—tow trucks may run limited routes or face weather delays. Expect that scheduling could take a few extra business days, especially in winter. Provide clear driving directions, landmarks, and any road restrictions (like weight limits or seasonal closures) so we can plan an efficient route.
Blocked-in or non-rolling vehicles
Tip: If your vehicle doesn’t roll, is buried behind other cars in a pole barn, or is stuck in mud or snow, the tow operator may not be able to load it safely. Before your pickup window, clear a path and, if possible, shovel or move obstructions. Let us know if wheels are missing, steering is locked, or the car is on blocks, so we can dispatch a truck prepared for that situation.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup is difficult—maybe you’re parking on a steep, tight street in Ferndale, your landlord in East Lansing has strict towing rules, or your cottage in the U.P. is hard to reach in winter—Great Lakes Givers can often coordinate alternatives. In some parts of Michigan, our towing partners can meet you at a nearby public lot, workplace, or relative’s driveway that’s easier for a truck to access.
